Ex 12:1...14; 1 Cor 11:23-26; Jn 13:1-15

Homily

The Old Testament book of Deuteronomy ends with the story of the death of Moses, just before the people of Israel entered the promised land, which Moses himself did not enter. Before he died, Moses recited a long hymn of thanksgiving and pronounced a long blessing over the twelve tribes of Israel. Before that, he wrote the entire text of the Law, which was to be deposited next to the Lord's Ark of the Covenant, which was to accompany the people to the Promised Land. And the account in Deuteronomy says that Moses wrote these articles of the Law ‘to the end’.

Our nights of passage

We are in the middle of a celebration that takes place in the middle of the night – a true ‘vigil’, therefore – during the passage from darkness to light. This passage is a symbolic expression of the long passage from darkness and original chaos at the beginning of Genesis to the light of the risen Christ on Easter morning.

Homélie 

Nous avions, hier, comme première lecture, le deuxième des quatre chants du Serviteur qu’on trouve dans le Livre de la Consolation d’Israël du prophète Isaïe. Aujourd’hui nous avons le troisième de ces chants, Nous l’avons d’ailleurs déjà lu à la messe du jour des Rameaux. L’Église a toujours vu dans ce Serviteur une préfiguration du Messie souffrant.

Homily

Yesterday, our first reading was the second of the four songs of the Servant found in the Book of Consolation of Israel by the prophet Isaiah. Today we have the third of these songs, which we also read at the Palm Sunday mass. The Church has always seen in this Servant a prefiguration of the suffering Messiah.

Homélie

          Ce récit de l’Évangile de saint Jean est très semblable à un récit que Matthieu et Marc placent tout de suite avant celui de la Passion. L’Évangile de Jean a certainement été écrit longtemps après celui des Synoptiques, mais il doit rapporter avec justesse un événement qu’on racontait dans les Églises qui étaient sous l’influence de Jean. Les amis intimes de Jésus, en particulier Marthe, Marie et Lazare, sont si importants dans l’Évangile de Jean, que celui-ci n’aurait pas pu inventer ce récit ni même l’arranger pour mettre Marthe, Marie et Lazare au cœur du récit.
