1 Jn 4, 7-10; Mk 6, 34-44

Today’s Gospel is a beautiful expression of Jesus’ love for his people. It is the narrative of the multiplication of the bread. It is not done by Jesus as a sign of power in order to prove His divinity. It is done out of love. When Jesus saw the crowd, says Mark, he was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd.”

First he gives them a spiritual food, by teaching them.

Then there is the interesting dialogue between Jesus and his disciples. The disciples think like good business persons. They tell Jesus to send the people away before it is too dark so that they can go to town and buy food. Jesus tells them to feed the crowd themselves. They start counting how much it will cost them. But Jesus tells them simply to share what they have. And after the sharing there was enough for everyone.

So, this reading and the one from John’s letter bring us to the essential of love, which does not consists only in nice feelings, but in concrete service and efficient sharing. And this is the heart of any community life : Love, service, sharing.
