Tuesday of the 17th week “B" -- July 30, 2002

Jeremiah 14:17-22; Matt 13:35-43

Homily

In early monastic literature, especially Pachômienne literature, we find a conception of the ascetic life that undoubtedly finds its inspiration in the Gospel we have just read. According to this view, God sowed all the fruits of the Spirit in us at the moment of our birth. He created us in His own image and, according to the beautiful figure in the Book of Genesis, put His own Breath of Life within us. But the Enemy or Devil is always on the lookout to snatch away these fruits of the Spirit and sow in their place the fruits of evil. The fruits of the Spirit are virtues, and the fruits of evil are vices.

Dans la littérature monastique primitive, spécialement dans la littérature pachômienne, on trouve une conception de la vie ascétique qui trouve sans doute son inspiration dans l'Évangile que nous venons de lire. Selon cette façon de voir, Dieu a semé en nous au moment de notre naissance, tous les fruits de l'Esprit. Il nous a en effet créés à son image et, selon la belle figure du Livre de la Genèse, il a mis en nous son propre Souffle de Vie. Mais l'Ennemi ou le Diable est toujours à l'affût pour arracher ces fruits de l'Esprit et semer à leur place les fruits du mal. Les fruits de l'Esprit, ce sont les vertus, et les fruits du mal, ce sont les vices.

Jeremiah exists for one thing only, the Word of God. It was this Word, when he first heard it, that gave him his mission as a prophet. He developed a taste for it to the point of devouring it: ‘ As soon as I found your words, I devoured them’, he said. In this Word, he found not only his nourishment, but his joy: ‘ Your word made me glad, made me deeply happy.’ The Father has pronounced his name over him and consecrated it to himself: ‘ Your name has been proclaimed over me, LORD, God of powers.’ As a result, he can no longer seek his joy in the ordinary pleasures of life: ‘ I will not seek my joy by consorting with those who are enjoying themselves.’

July 29, 2024 - Memory of ss. Martha, Mary and Lazarus

Homily

This liturgical memory of Martha, Mary and Lazarus could be seen as the feast of friendship. Indeed, we see in the Gospels that Jesus has a very wide range of relationships with the various people he meets. First, there are the crowds, to whom he addresses his message and for whom he is often moved by compassion. Among these crowds there were, of course, those whom he disturbed and who fought him, in particular the Doctors of the Law, the Scribes and the Pharisees; but there were also a large number of disciples, men and women who followed him on his apostolic tours. At one point, he chose seventy-two of them to send on mission. And then there was the group of twelve apostles whom he had called individually and in a special way, and who shared his entire public life. Among them were some more intimate ones whom he brought with him at special moments, such as at the Transfiguration and in Gethsemane.

Homélie

          On pourrait considérer cette mémoire liturgique de Marthe, Marie et Lazare, comme la fête de l'amitié. En effet, nous constatons dans les Évangiles que Jésus a une gamme très large de relations avec les diverses personnes qu'il rencontre. Il y a tout d'abord les foules, auxquelles il adresse son message et pour lesquelles il est souvent mû de compassion. Dans ces foules il y a, bien sûr ceux qu'il dérange et qui le combattent, en particulier les Docteurs de la Loi, les Scribes et les Pharisiens; mais il y a aussi un grand nombre de disciples, hommes et femmes qui le suivent dans ses tournées apostoliques. Parmi eux il en choisira à un moment donné soixante-douze, qu'il enverra en mission. Et puis il y avait le groupe des douze apôtres qu'il avait appelés individuellement et de façon spéciale et qui partageaient toute sa vie publique. Parmi eux, il y en avait de plus intimes qu'il amena avec lui dans des moments particuliers, comme au moment de la Transfiguration et à Gethsemani.

2 Rois 4, 42-44; Eph 4, 1-6; Jean 6,1-15

H O M É L I E 

          Dans la Lettre aux Éphésiens, saint Paul nous invite, ou plutôt nous supplie de suivre fidèlement l'appel que nous avons reçu. Cela signifie pour lui, vivre dans l'humilité, la douceur et la patience, nous supportant les uns les autres avec amour. Cela signifie aussi avoir à cœur de garder l'unité dans l'Esprit par le lien de la paix.

Homily

In the Letter to the Ephesians, Saint Paul invites us, or rather begs us, to faithfully follow the call we have received. For him, this means living in humility, gentleness and patience, bearing with one another with love. It also means keeping unity in the Spirit through the bond of peace.
