Homily

In the first two chapters of his Gospel, Luke tells parallel stories about John the Baptist and Jesus. John the Baptist's circumcision, with the song of Zechariah, parallels that of Jesus, with the song of Simeon; John grows up and withdraws into the desert, just as Jesus grows up and also withdraws into the desert for forty days; and so on.

            Dans ce récit de Matthieu, qui continue le texte lu hier, le titre « Fils de David » est donné aussi bien à Joseph qu’à Jésus. Ce qui est ainsi souligné, est le caractère profondément humain de l’intervention de Dieu dans l’histoire. Le Fils de Dieu ne s’est pas incarné dans l’abstrait. Il devint homme – un homme concret -- né à un moment particulier de l’histoire humaine, dans un peuple déterminé et une famille bien précise. Cet environnement particulier l’a façonné, lui a donné les catégories de pensée et de langage qui lui permirent de nous parler utilisant un ensemble bien spécifique d’images et de concepts.

Homily

In this account from Matthew, which continues the text read yesterday, the title ‘ Son of David ’ is given to both Joseph and Jesus. This underlines the profoundly human nature of God's intervention in history. The Son of God did not become incarnate in the abstract. He became man - a concrete man - born at a particular moment in human history, into a particular people and a particular family. This particular environment shaped him, gave him the categories of thought and language that enabled him to speak to us using a very specific set of images and concepts.

          A partir d’aujourd’hui nous chantons les fameuses antiennes « O », qui nous introduisent déjà d’une façon lyrique dans la joie du Temps de Noël. Les Évangiles des cinq derniers jours avant Noël seront tirés du premier chapitre de Luc, mais ceux d’aujourd’hui et de demain sont tirés du premier chapitre de Matthieu.

          Pour Dieu les hommes ne sont pas divisés en deux catégories : les bons et les mauvais. Pour Lui, tous sont Ses enfants ; tous sont pécheurs, en cheminement, toujours capables de tomber à nouveau, mais aussi toujours appelés à une nouvelle conversion, et donc capables d’une nouvelle conversion.

For God, human beings are not divided into two categories: the good and the bad. For Him, all are His children; all are sinners, on a journey, always capable of falling again, but also always called to a new conversion, and therefore capable of a new conversion.
