1 Cor 3:18-23; Lk 5:1-11

Homily

‘Leaving everything, they followed him’. This last sentence obviously gives us the key to understanding the Gospel passage we have just heard. We cannot be attached to Jesus without detaching ourselves from everything else. We cannot follow him without abandoning everything that might hold us back elsewhere. Luke, at the beginning of his Gospel, wants to show how the Apostles, and Peter in particular, made this radical break.

H O M É L I E

          "Laissant tout, ils le suivirent". Cette dernière phrase nous donne évidemment la clé pour la compréhension du passage d’Évangile que nous venons d'entendre. On ne peut s'attacher à Jésus sans se détacher de tout le reste. On ne peut se mettre à sa suite sans abandonner tout ce qui pourrait nous retenir ailleurs. Luc, en ce début de son Évangile, veut montrer comment les Apôtres, et Pierre en particulier, ont fait cette rupture radicale.

Jesus' activity in the Gospel often reminds us that true “power” lies not in the one who has strength and uses it to crush, but in the one who knows how to forgive and not respond to violence with violence.

          L’activité de Jésus dans l’Évangile nous rappelle souvent que le véritable « pouvoir » réside non pas dans celui qui a la force et qui l’utilise pour écraser, mais dans celui qui sait pardonner et ne pas répondre à la violence par la violence.

Homily

For anyone who has any experience of the money market or who is at all aware of social justice, this Gospel can be problematic. But this parable is not about economics or social justice; nor is it concerned with the talents we have received and must produce. This parable, like all the other parables, is above all about God. It teaches us something about the generosity of God, who always rewards us in a way that is totally disproportionate to what we bring.
