1 November 2025 - Feast of All Saints

Rev 7:2-4.9-14; 1 Jn 3:1-3; Mt 5:1-12a

Homily

          These words of Jesus are surprising words. They are not very 'religious'. There is no question of religion, not even of prayer. They refer to real life - a life in which there are people who suffer and are comforted, people who are subject to their fate and are finally fulfilled, people who are hungry and thirsty for justice, people who are pure of heart and work for peace in this world, but also poor people and the persecuted. A world, after all, not so different from our own. And to this world Jesus offers happiness. A happiness that is available to everyone, if instead of running after the idols of money and power, we opt for the reign of God. "Blessed are the poor; they have chosen the kingdom of heaven".

Luc nous dit que le Pharisien et le Publicain montèrent tous les deux au Temple pour prier. Le Pharisien pria vraiment, et sa prière pourrait bien être considérée humble. Il est vrai qu’il est conscient de sa justice, mais il sait que celle-ci est un don de Dieu. Il remercie Dieu de la grâce qu’il a reçue d’être un homme juste : « Mon Dieu, je te rends grâce parce que je ne suis pas comme les autres hommes... Je jeûne deux fois par semaine et je verse le dixième de tout ce que je gagne. » En réalité son attitude n’est pas très différente de celle de Paul dans la lettre à Timothée : « J’ai combattu le bon combat, j’ai fini la course, j’ai gardé la foi... » Quant au Publicain, il n’ose même pas lever les yeux vers le ciel. Il dit simplement : « Mon Dieu, prends pitié du pécheur que je suis! »

          Si vous le voulez-bien, nous allons nous attacher, dans un premier temps, à bien analyser le sens de plusieurs expressions de ce passage de l’Évangile de Luc, pour voir, dans un deuxième temps, comment ce message s’applique aussi à nous.

Homily

Nowadays, there are so many accidents and disasters like those mentioned in the first part of this Gospel that I don't think anyone is inclined to think that the victims of these events are sinners whom God wanted to punish. We are perhaps more inclined to say, when something painful or serious happens to us: ‘What have I done to God for this to happen to me?’ This is obviously a mistaken way of imagining God, for whom evil is not something to be explained, but to be eliminated. Thus, when a man born blind was brought to Him and He was asked whether this man was born blind because of his own sins or those of his parents, Jesus refused to answer the question and simply healed the blind man.

Homily

Luke tells us that the Pharisee and the Publican both went up to the Temple to pray. Even the Pharisee really prayed, and his prayer could well be considered humble. It is true that he is aware of his righteousness, but he knows that it is a gift from God. He thanks God for the grace he has received to be a righteous man: "My God, I thank you because I am not like other men... I fast twice a week and I pay a tenth of all I earn.” In reality, his attitude is not very different from that of Paul in the letter to Timothy: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith..." As for the Publican, he does not even dare to raise his eyes to heaven. He simply sais: "God, have mercy on this sinner!"

          David, après s’être construit un palais superbe, avait décidé -- dans ce qu’il concevait sans doute comme un moment de grande magnanimité -- de construire aussi une résidence à Dieu (« Voici que je vis dans un palais de cèdre et que Dieu vit sous la tente !) Et Dieu lui avait répondu : « Ce n’est pas toi qui me construira une maison ; c’est moi qui t’en ferai une. »
