May 4th, 2024 – Saturday of the 5th week of Easter

Acts 16:1-10; John 15:18-21 

H O M I L Y 

        The readings that we have at Mass during this Paschal Season are exceptionally rich. On the one hand, we read, in the Gospel, Jesus’ last recommendations to his disciples during the last meal that he ate with them, as they are narrated to us by John. On the other hand, the readings from the Acts of the Apostles give us a very lively picture of the primitive Church, where everything evolved at a very rapid pace. One of the aspects of that evolution, that I find the most fascinating, is the fact that the whole future of the Church was bound with the personal history of a few individuals. (Actually, it will be like this during the whole history of the Church). Throughout the whole Book of Acts, the central figure is obviously that of Paul; but I find still more fascinating, on many aspects, the figure of Barnabas, without whom Paul would have perhaps never been known.

Mercredi, le 3 mai 2023 – Fête des saints Philippe et Jacques, Apôtres

1 Co 15, 1-8; Jn 14, 8-14

H O M É L I E

          Nous fêtons aujourd'hui deux Apôtres, fort différents l'un de l'autre. Le premier est Philippe. Il fut l'un des premiers disciples appelés par Jésus après son baptême. Comme Pierre, il était de Bethsaïde en Galilée. Lorsque Jésus le rencontra il lui dit simplement : "Suis-moi"; et c'est ce qu'il fit. En termes de caractérologie, on dirait qu'il était tout à fait "primaire". Il est presque toujours le premier à réagir lorsque Jésus disait quelque chose. Par exemple, lorsque Jésus dit aux disciples de nourrir les foules, Philippe, qui compte vite, réagit en disant: "L'équivalent de six mois de salaire ne suffirait pas à acheter du pain pour tant de monde…" Peu avant la Passion, lorsque Jésus dit qu'il va vers le Père, Philippe répond: "Montre-nous le Père, et cela nous suffit." À chacune de ses réactions, Jésus réponds avec une lumière nouvelle.

James is one of the most important figures of the early Church.

This is not James, brother of John, who was killed at the very beginning of the persecution by Herod, even before this one put Peter in jail. It is the other James, who was the head of the Church of Jerusalem. A great authority is recognized to him by everyone, including Peter and Paul.

          To the people of his own village, Jesus was known as the Carpenter's son. And one day, when he was accused by the Doctors of the Law of breaking the Sabbath's rules by performing miracles on that day, he answered that his heavenly Father worked all the time and so did he.

La première lecture nous raconte une période particulièrement mouvementée du ministère apostolique de Paul et Barnabé. Rien ne les décourage, même lorsqu'ils sont l'objet de violence et que Paul est lapidé et laissé pour mort. Si une telle violence s'acharne contre eux, c'est précisément que, non seulement ils refusent d'utiliser eux-mêmes la violence, mais qu'ils prêchent la Bonne Nouvelle à tous, sans exception, reconnaissant ainsi à toute personne la même dignité et la même vocation d'enfant de Dieu, au delà de toutes les différences.

Acts 14:19-28; John 14:27-31a

Homily

The first reading tells us about a particularly eventful period in the apostolic ministry of Paul and Barnabas. Nothing discouraged them, even when they were subjected to violence and Paul was stoned and left for dead. If such violence was directed against them, it was precisely because not only did they refuse to use violence themselves, but they preached the Good News to everyone, without exception, thus recognising that every person has the same dignity and the same vocation as a child of God, beyond all differences.
