Il est communément admis que les chapitres 67 à 72 de la Règle ont été ajoutés ultérieurement par Benoît au corpus principal de sa Règle, qui se terminait alors avec ce qui est maintenant le chapitre 73 ; celui-ci faisait suite au chapitre 66. Cette nouvelle séquence de chapitres traite de manière renouvelée plusieurs thèmes déjà abordés dans les chapitres précédents, mais souligne de façon particulière les relations horizontales au sein de la communauté. Nous pouvons considérer ce chapitre 72 comme le testament spirituel de Benoît. En outre, il ne peut être lu séparément du chapitre 71 sur l’obéissance mutuelle.

Le chapitre 72 de la Règle se termine sur cette belle phrase : « Ils ne préféreront absolument rien au Christ; et qu'il nous amène tous ensemble à la vie éternelle. » Ce sont très probablement là les derniers mots de la Règle écrits par Benoît, puisque, comme vous le savez, le chapitre 73, qui est le dernier chapitre de la Règle en sa forme actuelle, a été écrit avant, et concluait la Règle, après le chapitre 66. Par la suite, Benoît a ajouté les chapitres 67 à 72 (Nous reparlerons de ces chapitres dans la seconde conférence).

Kapitel 72 der Regel endet mit diesem schönen Satz: „Sie sollen nichts höher stellen als Christus, der uns alle zum ewigen Leben fuhren möge." Das sind höchstwahrscheinlich die letzten Worte der Regel, die Benedikt geschrieben hat, denn bekanntlich wurde Kapi­tel 73, das letzte Kapitel der Regel in ihrer heutigen Fassung, schon vorher geschrieben; es kam als letztes Kapitel nach Kap. 66, später hat Benedikt die Kapitel 67 bis 72 hinzugefügt. Ich zitiere diesen kurzen Vers der Regel, denn er drückt die zentrale Stellung Christi im Leben des benediktinischen Bruders, der benediktinischen Schwester aus und hebt zugleich die Tatsache hervor, dass Christus nichts vorzuziehen bedeutet: ihm auf eine Reise zu folgen, die uns zum ewigen Leben führen wird - und zwar uns alle (das dürfte die beste Übersetzung von pariter sein), da wir Zönobiten sind.

As I mentioned Saturday, it is commonly accepted that the chapters 67 to 72 of the Rule were added by Benedict, later on in his life, to the main corpus of the Rule that ended with what is now chapter 73, which then followed chapter 66. That new series of chapters treat in a new manner many of the themes that were already treated in the preceding chapters, but underline in a particular way the horizontal relationships within the community. We can consider this chapter 72 as Benedict’s spiritual testament. Furthermore, it cannot be read separately from chapter 71 on mutual obedience.

Chapter 72 of the Rule ends with this beautiful sentence : « Let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and may he bring us all together to everlasting life ».Those are most probably the last words of the Rule written by Benedict, since, as you know, chapter 73, which is the last chapter in the present form of the Rule was written before, and concluded the Rule, after chapter 66,Later on Benedict added the chapters 67 to 72, (We will return to those chapters on Monday)
