Homélies de Dom Armand Veilleux

17 June 2024 - Monday of the 11th week, even-numbered year

1 Kings 21:1-16; Matthew 5:38-42

Turn the other cheek

This Gospel passage brings to mind a scene from the life of Mahatma Gandhi. The event took place towards the end of Gandhi's life. India had just gained its independence, but it was already divided into two countries: India itself, a Hindu country, and Pakistan, a Muslim country; and a civil war was raging in the main cities between Muslims and Hindus. Gandhi began a fast, deciding not to eat anything until peace was restored between the two factions. It was then that a man of Hindu faith came to Gandhi. He was desperate, convinced that he would be damned forever because he had killed a Muslim child. He had killed him in revenge because Muslims had killed his own child. Gandhi then told him what he had to do to avoid damnation. Go," he said, "find a child of the same age as the one you lost, adopt him and bring him up as your own child. But above all, take care to choose a Muslim child and bring him up as a good Muslim.

16 juin 2024 -- 11ème dimanche « B »

1 R 19, 9a.11-16 ; Mt 5, 27-32

H O M É L I E

16 June 2024 -- 11th Sunday "B"

Ezek 17, 22-24; 2 Cor 5, 6-10; Mk 4, 26-34

Homily

The two parables we have just heard, that of the patient farmer and that of the mustard seed, are part of a group of four parables, the other two being that of the sower (Mk 4:38) and that of the leaven (Mt 13:33). These four parables deal with the same reality: the failure of Jesus in his preaching, or at least the slowness with which the results of his preaching became apparent.

1 R 18, 41-46 ; Mt 5, 20-26

H O M É L I E

14 June 2024 - Friday of the 10th even-numbered week

1 Kings 19, 9a.11-16; Matthew 5, 27-32

Homily

Elijah was a prophet powerful in word and deed. When he had the word of God, he did not hesitate to strike down the enemies of the Lord. In the first reading of the Mass a few days ago, we saw him slay the 450 priests of Baal with his own hands. Queen Jezebel, who was protecting these prophets of Baal, wanted to get rid of Elijah. So Elijah fled. After a few days walking in the desert, he was exhausted and discouraged. He received no more word from God. He found himself weak and fearful like all men. He simply received enough food to continue his journey to Horeb. In reality, in this symbolic journey, Elijah has retraced the path of the Exodus from Moses' meeting with Yahweh on the same Mount Horeb.

13 June 2024 -- Thursday of the 10th week in Ordinary Time

1 Kings 18:41-46; Matthew 5:20-26

Homily

This Gospel is taken from the section of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus shows what the completely new character of the New Law consists in. ‘You have learned...; I tell you...’ he repeats several times.
