Acts 13:44-52; John 14:7-14

Homily

Dear brothers and sisters,

          In these days of Eastertide, the first reading of the Mass continues to tell us about the beginnings of apostolic preaching, first in Jerusalem and then to all the nations. The Gospel reading is taken from Saint John, especially, in these days, from the account of Jesus' discourses to his disciples before his passion. The tone is very familiar. Yesterday, Jesus told them that he was going to his Father and their Father, and that they too knew the way. Thomas replied, ‘We don't even know where you're going; how can we know the way? Today he speaks to them of his Father and says: ‘From now on you know him and have seen him’. And this time it was Philip who replied: ‘Show us the Father and that will be enough for us’. This was an opportunity for Jesus to explain to them that the Father and he are one, and therefore whoever knows the Son also knows the Father.

Thomas est un personnage vraiment intéressant. Il n'hésite jamais à intervenir même avec des questions qui n'ont rien de diplomatique. Lorsque Jésus dit aux Apôtres qu'il va leur préparer une place près de son Père et qu'il reviendra les prendre avec lui, Thomas objecte : "Seigneur, nous ne savons pas où tu vas. Comment saurions-nous le chemin ?" Et comme à chacune de ses interventions, Jésus le prend au sérieux et non seulement lui donne une réponse, mais lui fait une révélation importante : « Je suis la Voie, la Vérité et la Vie. Nul ne vient au Père sinon par moi."

Homily

Thomas is an interesting character. He never hesitates to intervene, even with undiplomatic questions. When Jesus told the Apostles that he was going to prepare a place for them near his Father and that he would come back to take them with him, Thomas objected: “Lord, we don't know where you're going. How can we know the way?” And as with every time he speaks, Jesus takes him seriously and not only gives him an answer, but makes an important revelation: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

L'Évangéliste Marc fut un disciple de l'Apôtre Pierre, et son Évangile est considéré comme la première collection des paroles et des événements entourant la vie et le ministère de Jésus. Comme lecture d'Évangile, ce matin, nous avons les derniers versets de cet Évangile de Marc, et comme première lecture, nous avons les derniers versets de la Première Lettre de Pierre, où il transmet les salutations de son disciple et fils Marc.

Homily

The Evangelist Mark was a disciple of the Apostle Peter, and his Gospel is considered to be the first collection of the words and events surrounding the life and ministry of Jesus. As our Gospel reading this morning, we have the last verses of this Gospel of Mark, and as our first reading, we have the last verses of Peter's First Letter, where he conveys greetings from his disciple and son Mark.

Homilía

Los textos de la misa de hoy tratan esencialmente de la Palabra. En primer lugar, en el Evangelio, Jesús dice que ha sido enviado por su Padre para transmitir una Palabra a la humanidad. Él mismo es esta Palabra que el Padre nos dirige, y en esta única Palabra, el Padre habla en plenitud, de modo que quien le recibe recibe al Padre, y quien le ve, ve también al Padre. Él ha venido a traer la luz al mundo. Y Jesús explica en qué consistirá el Juicio Final. No será un juicio desde fuera, hecho caer por Dios sobre cada persona. No, será simplemente una confirmación del estado al que ha llegado cada persona al aceptar o rechazar la Palabra. Nos situamos en la línea de la Vida o de la Muerte, de la Luz o de las Tinieblas, al aceptar o no la Palabra de Dios y al dejar que transforme o no nuestras vidas.

Homily

The texts of today's Mass are essentially about the Word. First, in the Gospel, Jesus says that He was sent by His Father to transmit a Word to humanity. He himself is the Word that the Father addresses to us, and in this single Word, the Father speaks in full, so that whoever receives Him receives the Father, and whoever sees Him sees the Father. He has come to bring light to the world. And Jesus explains what the Last Judgement will consist of. It will not be a judgement from outside, brought down by God on each person. No, it will simply be a confirmation of the state each person has reached by accepting or rejecting the Word. We place ourselves in the line of Life or Death, Light or Darkness, by accepting or not accepting the Word of God and by letting it transform our lives or not.
