          Nous célébrons aujourd’hui saint Martin, bien connu pour son geste de charité envers un pauvre avec qui il partagea son vêtement, mais qui fut surtout un grand évêque des premiers siècles de l'Église, et un évêque qui eut un rôle très important dans le développement du monachisme en Occident.

Today we celebrate Saint Martin, well known for his act of charity towards a poor man with whom he shared his clothes, but who was above all a great bishop of the first centuries of the Church, and a bishop who played a very important role in the development of monasticism in the West.

          Le ton des lectures bibliques à la messe nous fait déjà sentir que nous approchons de la fin de l’année liturgique. Comme première lecture nous commençons aujourd’hui le Livre de la Sagesse, qui nous accompagnera durant toute la semaine. Dans ses premiers versets ce livre s’adresse à « ceux qui gouvernent la terre » -- Aimez la justice, vous qui gouvernez la terre – mais le message vaut pour chacun de nous. C’est un appel à vivre dans la justice, mais dans le sens le plus profond du mot, c’est-à-dire avoir un cœur droit qui agit en conformité avec l’Esprit de Dieu appelé ici « Sagesse ».

Homily

The tone of the biblical readings at Mass already makes us feel that we are approaching the end of the liturgical year. As the first reading, we begin today the Book of Wisdom, which will accompany us throughout the week. In its first verses, this book addresses ‘those who govern the earth’ – Love justice, you who govern the earth – but the message applies to each one of us. It is a call to live in justice, but in the deepest sense of the word, that is, to have a righteous heart that acts in accordance with the Spirit of God, referred to here as ‘Wisdom’.

Ez 47, 1-2.8-9.12 ; 1 Co 3, 9-11.16-17 ; Jn 2, 13-22 

Fête de la Dédicace de la Basilique du Latran

          En chaque communauté, où il y a une église consacrée, on célèbre chaque année la « dédicace » de cette église, c’est-à-dire l’anniversaire du jour où l’édifice a été consacré au culte de Dieu, et donc le jour où la communauté a commencé de s’y réunir plusieurs fois par jour pour y célébrer les Offices divins, et où les moniales ou les moines ont commencé d’y venir privément, à toute heure, pour y rencontrer Dieu dans une prière intime. Nous célébrons également chaque année la dédicace de l’Église du diocèse où se trouve notre monastère. Eh bien, aujourd’hui c’est la dédicace de la cathédrale de l’Église de Rome que nous célébrons.

Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of Lateran

          In each community where there is a consecrated church, we celebrate the anniversary of that consecration every hear, that is, we celebrate the anniversary of the day when that building was dedicated to God’s worship, and therefore the day when the community began to gather there several times a day in order to celebrate the Divine Office, and when nuns or monks began to come there privately, at any time, in order to meet God in an intimate prayer. Likewise, we celebrate every year the dedication of the Cathedral of the diocese where the monastery is located. Today, we celebrate the dedication of the cathedral of the Church of Rome, called the Basilica of the Lateran.
