11 February 2025 - Tuesday of the 5th week in Ordinary Time

Gen 1:20 - 2:4a: Mk 7:1-13

Homily

          In the Gospel, Jesus reminds both the crowds who come to Him and the Pharisees and scribes that the purity that counts before God is not the ‘ritual purity’ with which ancient religions, including that of Israel, were concerned, and which they strove to achieve through rituals and cultic practices, but the purity of the heart.

H O M É L I E 

          Toute la Bible, l'Ancien comme le Nouveau Testament, est l'histoire de témoins vivants qui témoignent de ce qu'ils ont vu et entendu, mais aussi de leur propre expérience spirituelle. Cette vocation de témoin fut celle de tout le peuple d'Israël, appelé à témoigner à la face des Nations de ce que Yahwé est le seul Dieu. Au sein du peuple d'Israël, ce fut la vocation de Moïse, de David et spécialement des grands prophètes appelés à témoigner de leur expérience du Dieu vivant, dans leur propre vie et dans celle du peuple.

Is 6, 1-8; 1 Cor 15, 1-11; Lk 5, 1-11

Homily

          The entire Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is the story of living witnesses who bear witness to what they have seen and heard, but also to their own spiritual experience. This vocation of witness was that of the entire people of Israel, called to bear witness before the Nations to the fact that Yahweh is the only God. Within the people of Israel, this was the vocation of Moses, David and especially the great prophets, called to bear witness to their experience of the living God, in their own lives and in the lives of the people.

Héb 13, 15-17.20-21; Marc 6, 30-34

          Dans l'Évangile lu il y a deux jours Jésus avait envoyé ses disciples deux par deux. Il leur avait donné autorité sur les esprits impurs, c'est-à-dire le pouvoir de guérison. Il ne leur avait pas donné l'ordre d'enseigner. Rappelons-nous que c'était au tout début de la vie publique de Jésus et qu'il avait à peine commencé à former ses disciples. Ceux-ci cependant firent beaucoup plus que Jésus leur avait demandé de faire. Non seulement ils enseignèrent mais ils guérirent en faisant des onctions d'huile et en imposant les mains. Ces symboles renvoyant à la royauté davidique engendrèrent évidemment dans le peuple l'espoir d'une restauration nationale, avec la venue d'un messie roi.

Homily

          In the Gospel reading two days ago, Jesus sent his disciples out two by two. He had given them authority over unclean spirits, in other words, the power to heal. He did not command them to teach. Remember that this was at the very beginning of Jesus' public life and that he had barely begun to train his disciples. But they did much more than Jesus had asked them to do. Not only did they teach, but they also healed by anointing with oil and laying on hands. These symbols of Davidic kingship obviously gave rise to hopes among the people of a national restoration, with the coming of a messiah-king.

2 February 2025 - Presentation of the Lord in the Temple

Homily

          Throughout the Christmas season, in our liturgical celebrations, we have celebrated the mystery of the Incarnation, that is, the fact that God wished to become one of us. Throughout the rest of the liturgical year, we celebrate the same mystery in different ways. Today, on the feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, we celebrate the Incarnation as an encounter -- God's encounter with humanity, expressed symbolically in the meeting in the Temple on the fortieth day after Jesus' birth. In the Rite of Light, which preceded our Eucharistic celebration, we celebrated this same mystery of the Incarnation of God as the coming of Light into our darkness.

          Le septième jour de la création, Dieu se reposa. Après avoir créé, au cours des six jours précédents, un univers qui connaissait la foudre et les éclairs, les tempêtes et les ouragans, les volcans et les tremblements de terre, Dieu se reposa calmement car, comme Il l’explique à Job, il avait établi des limites que ces pouvoirs de la nature ne pouvaient pas franchir.
