10 mars 2026 – Mardi de la 3^ème semaine de Carême
Daniel 3, 25.34-43 ; Mt  18, 21-35 

Homélie

          Cette affaire des 7 fois et des 70x7 fois est une bien vieille histoire. Elle remonte à l’époque de Caïn et Abel.  Après le meurtre d’Abel, selon le récit de la Genèse, Dieu chassa Caïn du Paradis.  Ce dernier dit alors à Dieu : « Si tu me chasses aujourd’hui de l’étendue de ce sol, je serai caché à ta face, je serai errant et vagabond sur la terre, et quiconque me trouvera me tuera." Et le Seigneur répondit : "Eh bien! Si l’on tue Caïn, il sera vengé sept fois."  Et, quelques générations plus tard, Lamek, le petit-fils de Caïn, prit deux femmes, Ada et Cilla, et leur dit, avec assez de bravade : "Ada et Cilla, écoutez ma voix! Femmes de Lamek, tendez l’oreille à mon dire! Oui, j’ai tué un homme pour une blessure, un enfant pour une meurtrissure. Oui, Caïn sera vengé sept fois, mais Lamek soixante-dix-sept fois."

   This business of seven times and seventy times seven is a very old story. It dates back to the time of Cain and Abel. After Abel's murder, according to the account in Genesis, God drove Cain out of Paradise. Cain then said to God, ‘If you drive me out today from the face of the ground, I shall be hidden from your face, and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.’ And the Lord replied, ‘If anyone kills Cain, he will be avenged seven times over.’ And a few generations later, Lamech, Cain's grandson, took two wives, Ada and Zilla, and said to them, rather boastfully, "Ada and Zilla, hear my voice! Wives of Lamech, listen to my words! Yes, I have killed a man for a wound, a child for a bruise. Yes, Cain will be avenged seven times, but Lamech seventy-seven times."

Après son baptême par Jean, Jésus passa au désert 40 jours, après lesquels il décida de ne pas commencer son ministère à Jérusalem, qui était le centre du judaïsme, mais dans la lointaine province de Galilée d'où il venait.

After his baptism by John, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert, after which He decided not to begin His ministry in Jerusalem, the center of Judaism, but in the distant province of Galilee, from which He came.

In this Gospel, there is something surprising, which carries a lesson for us. It is that Jesus never got the drink he was asking for! He was tired and thirsty; he asked the woman for some water, and that provoked a long and lively conversation between the two of them; and the end, the woman is so excited that she leaves her bucket there on the ground and run to town to tell people about Jesus. At least, if we limit ourselves to the narrative we have, she did not draw water for Jesus.

          Il y a dans cet Évangile quelque chose de surprenant et qui comporte sans doute une leçon pour nous. C’est que Jésus, finalement, n’a pas reçu l’eau qu’il demandait. Il était fatigué et assoiffé et il demanda de l’eau à la Samaritaine en lui disant : « Donne-moi à boire ». Cette demande provoque entre eux deux une conversation animée et, à la fin, la femme est si excitée que, laissant là sa cruche, elle court à la ville pour parler de Jésus aux gens qu’elle rencontre. Si nous nous en tenons au récit tel que nous le trouvons dans l’Évangile, elle ne puisa pas d’eau pour Jésus avant de courir à la ville.
